About the Charitable Trust
For historical legal reasons, the main membership organisation (Amnesty International UK Section) is not considered to be a charity, so the Charitable Trust was formed to carry out those activities deemed charitable under English law.
Following publication of revised guidelines by the Charities Commission on what constitutes promotion of human rights as a charitable purpose, the Trust adopted new and wider objects in 2005. The trust funds key human rights activities including:
- Monitoring abuse of human rights
- Educating the public about human rights
- Raising awareness of, and promoting public support for, human rights
- Research into human rights issues
A full list of objects is provided in Clause 3 of the Memorandum, UK Section Charitable Trust Constitution below.
The charity number for Amnesty International UK Section Charitable Trust is 1051681. This is only for the CharitableTrust. Amnesty International UK Section is not registered as a charity.

The Charitable Trust is a limited company subject to all statutory regulations governing both charities (the Charity Commission) and companies (Companies House).
The Trustees of the charity act as the directors of the limited company. There are usually eight Trustees, all of them appointed by the Board of the UK Section. Some of them are current board members of Amnesty International UK.
Trustees serve a three-year term of office and can be re-appointed for one further three-year term before standing down for one year. If a Trustee ceases to be a Board member during their term of office, they are entitled to continue as a Trustee to complete their three-year term, and if eligible, may be re-appointed as a non-Board Trustee for a further three years.
