Poverty is a human rights issue: around the world, people living in poverty are frequently denied the full range of human rights. Through the Poverty and Human Rights lessons, assembly and films of residents of the Deep Sea community in Kenya explaining their fight for human rights, students aged 14+ across the curriculum will learn about the impact of poverty, and begin to understand what changes are needed to improve everyone's right to live with dignity. The pack is available in English and Welsh.

Amnesty's aim is for young people to develop the knowledge, skills and values to form their own opinions on human rights issues and feel inspired to take action. The accompanying Taking Action Project enables teachers to guide students through the development, researching, carrying out and evaluation of a campaign.

You will also find many other ways you and your students can get involved here, from starting a youth group to joining our teacher's network, plus extra resources on everything from interview skills and lobbying to banner-making.

TAKE ACTION FOR THE DEEP SEA COMMUNITY 

ACTION 1: MAKE AND SEND A GREETINGS CARD TO THE DEEP SEA COMMUNITY
Send a message of solidarity to the Deep Sea residents (please do not include student or school addresses).

ACTION 2: LOBBY THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT
Send a letter to James Orengo, Minister of Lands in Kenya calling for an end to Deep Sea evictions.

ACTION 3: RAISE AWARENESS IN SCHOOL - POSTER CAMPAIGN/FILM SCREENING
'Poverty is not inevitable' is a good poster message or 'human rights live here' if the poster is about slums. You could also hold a film screening of the Deep Sea film or Slum Dog Millionaire. Amnesty's Protect the Human Week (17-23 Oct) includes World Poverty Day (17 Oct) and is a great time to do this action! Coming soon: Deep Sea/Slum Dog Millionaire film screening pack

ACTION 4: TELL AMNESTY WHAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE DONE TO TACKLE POVERTY
What should be done? Why should it be done? Who should do it, and how can it be done? Tell us by making a poster/artwork and taking a photo (or even making a short video) and posting it on ProtectTheHuman.com (please tag your photo POVERTY and read site Terms + Conditions and Child Protection Guidance first).
