Amnesty is committed to providing a site that is as widely accessible as possible. The site has been designed following W3C standards. The server recognises browsers using assistive technologies and automatically delivers a text-only version of the site to those browsers. Text size throughout the site can be altered as required by the visitor using their browser, and all images, audio and video files are accompanied by text versions or alt tags (tooltips).

There are a number of documents for download across the site which use the portable document format (pdf). The Adobe site gives useful information on how to configure free Adobe Reader® 7.0 software to work with assistive technology and obtain greater access to PDF files.
It is quick and easy to change the default view of this site and many other sites which have been designed with accessibility in mind. Site visitors can make the text bigger or smaller and even change the background and text colours for the entire site by using tools in their preferred browser.
This website site includes video and audio files which we hope will enrich the user experience. Some of these are streamed from a separate 'streaming server'. This allows the site visitor to experience the media immediately, rather than wait for download.
Where the media is not streamed, the site visitor will need to wait for most or all of the file to download before being able to watch any of it. The files vary a lot in size, dependent on the dimensions of the player screen, the length of the video and the compression used. This means that, dependent on your connection speed, it will take varying amounts of time to download video or audio. One of the following players will usually be required in order to play the file:
Please note that because video is supplied to us from many different sources, we cannot always guarantee that it will always be the same quality or that there will always be a choice of players. We will endeavour, where possible, to provide an accompanying transcript.
Access keys allow swift navigation across the main areas of the site through use of the keyboard rather than a mouse or pointing device. As well as access keys, the site visitor can use the tab key to key through all the links on a page, pressing ENTER or the 'return' key when the desired link is highlit.
