First Steps
Download First Steps (pdf) for advice and info on what to do next. Here's some highlights:
Step 1: GET INFO
The person responsible for societies at your Student Union should have all the info about setting up a new one, ranging from budget allocations to whether you get a notice board - hopefully all in a convenient societies handbook. Check out How To...Make the Most Out Of Your Student Union for more advice and ideas.
Step 2: GET MEMBERS
Fresher's is probably the best time to recruit new members and you'll find lots of ideas and advice on this site, but if you've missed Freshers don't panic! You'll find plenty of other ideas in the First Steps guide.
Step 3: GET ORGANISED
Try to set a date for your first meeting within ten days of your Fresher's Fair - here's some resources to help:

- First meeting presentation (ppt): a powerpoint you can adapt for your group
- Or why not invite an Amnesty speaker to give a talk?
Step 4: GET ACTIVE
As part of the student action network you will start getting monthly action campaign mailings full of actions and resources - and you can get started even before your first one arrives by downloading the most recent campaign briefing from the student homepage.
Step 5: GET ADVICE
Talk to other societies on campus for their tips about organising and advertising meetings and events, and ask the Raise & Give (RAG) society to lend a hand - they are often one of the most active groups on campus. Most importantly, don't forget you can always contact us - we are here to support you and we love hearing from you!
