Introduction
Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman wrote a one-hour play, Voices from Beyond the Dark, for Amnesty International USA in September 2000. It was first performed at the Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts in New York, and later at the Chichester Festival. Dorfman's play was inspired by Speak Truth to Power, Human Rights Defenders Who are Changing the World, a book by Kerry Kennedy Cuomo about human rights defenders published by Amnesty International USA.

About the adapted version
The play featured here was adapted and rewritten by Dan Jones of Amnesty International UK for a 35-minute performance on human rights defenders at the AIUK National Conference and AGM, held in Lancaster in April 2005. A cast of 28 performed it. Many new characters were added, and many others had to be deleted. Pictures of all the human rights defenders featured were projected on a giant screen. The play had a musical accompaniment provided by a jazz band from Impington Village College.Download Voices from Beyond the Dark
