LETTER FAX
Since February 2003, members of women’s rights organisation WOZA have been repeatedly arrested while taking part in peaceful demonstration against the social, economic and human rights situation in Zimbabwe.
Arrests and beatings of members continued throughout 2009. They have been subjected to intimidation, harassment, and ill-treatment by police officers. Many of those arrested have later been released without charge, but some have been charged under repressive legislation such as the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and the Miscellaneous Offences Act (MOA). Women with babies, children and a heavily pregnant woman have been among those arrested.
UPDATE: 14 MARCH 2011
Between 28 February and 4 March 2011 in several separate incidents WOZA members were arrested in Bulawayo in what the organisation views as a crackdown by security forces. Some members detained at Bulawayo police station were not provided with food, blankets or access to medication and were denied access to their lawyer. Seven members who were detained for 2 nights were reportedly tortured.
