Wales: Demand support for victims of sex trafficking

2007 marks the bicentenary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Yet the global trade in people thrives and there is growing evidence of people being trafficked into Wales for sexual exploitation.

The UK government has signed the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking. This requires prompt action from the Welsh Assembly Government to ensure that the victims of trafficking get the support they need.

'Trafficking in human beings' means the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of people, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, for the purpose of exploitation.

There may be around 200 women in Wales at any one time that have been trafficked there for the sex trade.  It is not a crime restricted to cities, but takes place in small communities across Wales.

The UK Government has signed the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking. The Welsh Assembly Government will now be obliged to provide secure accommodation and support services to help the victims of this brutal practice. Sensitive and appropriate services are required without delay. The Welsh Assembly Government must

• Provide secure accommodation for the victims of trafficking in Wales
• Provide support services, medical care and legal advice to victims in Wales
